Double disappointment for Killie

Kilmarnock 0-0 Alloa
Tennents Scottish Cup third round

Kilmarnock were held to a goalless draw by Alloa in the Scottish Cup - and then found they had been relegated to the foot of the Premier League in their absence.

Goalkeeper Mark Cairns ensured a replay for the Second Division side as he produced a series of stunning saves.

Martin Cameron sent a tame shot wide for the visitors before Cairns thwarted Alex Burke.

Everything went according to plan and if we had sneaked a goal it would have been a game to remember
Alloa manager Terry Christie
Jerome Vareille and substitute David Bagan were also denied by the inform Alloa star.

Alloa have lost only one out of 11 cup ties this season.

Kilmarnock's disappointment at failing to kill off their lowly opposition was compounded as Aberdeen's victory against St Johnstone left them rooted to the foot of the table.

However they do still have a game in hand on the Dons, who are one point ahead of them with 16 points.

Kilmarnock suffered as a result of their familiar striking problems - they have scored only nine league goals all season.

Chants of "What a load of rubbish" rang around the ground and manager Bobby Williamson himself was barracked by the crowd.

Alloa manager Terry Christie was thrilled at his team's display and is looking forward to the replay which will now be at Recreation Park on Wednesday and not Tuesday as originally scheduled.

"Everything went according to plan and if we had sneaked a goal it would have been a game to remember," he said.

"If you are playing against a Premier League side you need athletic players and we have a few of them.

"Kilmarnock are an extremely hard-working team but there wasn't a lot of difference between us, especially in the first half.

"We knew we would have to defend for a lot of the game and I am proud of my players. They all worked as hard as they could."

Teams:

Kilmarnock: Meldrum, MacPherson, Lauchlan, Dindeleux, Baker, Holt, Durrant, Reilly, Burke, Vareille, Jeffrey. Subs: Hessey, Bagan, Smith.

Alloa: Cairns, Wilson, Conway, Valentine, Beaton, D. Clark, Christie, Irvine, Donaghy, Walker, Cameron. Subs: Boyle, G. Clark, McKechnie.

Referee: Garry Mitchell (Scotland)
