There've been more demonstrations in Austria against its far-right Freedom Party sharing power in a new coalition government.

Protestors gathered in a number of provincial cities and again in the capital, Vienna.

President Thomas Klestil appealed for calm, after violence in Vienna last night Friday left dozens of police and demonstrators injured.

The Freedom party leader, Joerg Haider has shrugged off political sanctions imposed by the European Union - calling them insignificant and urging Austrians not to be intimidated.

European conservative party leaders meeting in Madrid have distanced themselves from the new Austrian administration.

Without naming Austria, they said there was no place for racism and xenophobia in Europe.
