Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

Chelsea continued their remarkable run against Tottenham, as Bernard Lambourde's second half goal gave them victory in this London derby.

It is now 10 years since Spurs have beaten their local rivals and Lambourde's sucker punch ensured there would be no change from established form.

Spurs had their chances - particularly in a frantic finale when they hit the bar and were deined by visiting keeper Ed De Goey - but they paid the price for some poor finishing.

And one major lapse in the Spurs defence proved decisive - Lambourde exploiting some non-existent marking at a free-kick to score with a neat lob.

Walker holds out

Ian Walker was in fine form in the Spurs goal - and but for his efforts the home side would have fallen behind earlier than they did.

George Weah was the first to be frustrated by a sharp Walker save after bursting through the middle.

And the keeper did even better to deny Chris Sutton after Gus Poyet, Didier Deschamps and Weah had linked up to split the defence.

Chelsea went ahead in the 52 minute - as the Tottenham defence went absent without leave.

Sol Campbell was penalised just outside the area and seemed to lose his bearings completely when Dennis Wise played a delicate free kick around the wall to find Lambourde completely unmarked - and he scored with a neat chip over Walker.

Out-and-out attack

Tottenham, desperate for an equaliser, furiously chased the game in the closing stages.

Chris Armstrong almost capitalised on a sliced clearance from Ed De Goey - but he shot straight at the keeper.

Steffen Iversen then sent a header crashing against the bar from Stephen Carr's neat cross.

Spurs were getting closer and closer to equalising and only a superb save with his foot from De Goey denied Iversen from close range after a flowing right-wing move, Ginola fluffing the follow-up.

Iversen was stretchered off the pitch in agony as a result of his clash with the Dutch keeper.

Darren Anderton's shot was deflected wide as Spurs continued to bombard the Chelsea goal - but there was no way back.
