Kuwaiti calls for government reform A left-wing political group in Kuwait has called for urgent reform of the country's power structure to prevent what it calls the economic paralysis of the country. The Kuwait Democratic Forum, or KDF, says a new cabinet was vital to take control of the decision-making process. The KDF which was formed after the end of Iraqi occupation in 1991 has long called for the separation of the dual role of crown prince and prime minister. As crown prince, Sheik Saad al-Abdullah al-Sabah can't be questioned in the National Assembly, a situation many members say contributes to a lack of government accountability. An internal debate on succession in Kuwait has been growing since Sheik Saad flew abroad for medical treatment several times last year. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
