Olazabal lifted by birthday birdies
US Masters champion Jose Maria Olazabal celebrated his 34th birthday by storming into contention at the Greg Norman International. The Spaniard carded a seven-under-par 66 in the third round to move into joint third spot at The Lakes course, two shots off the lead. Welshman David Park and Australian Lucas Parsons head the field on 13-under.
Overnight leader Park saw a four-shot advantage evaporate in the later stages of his round, as strengthening wind played havoc with his game.
Park shot a level par 73, while Parsons sank a 40-foot birdie putt at the last for a 70. Ryder Cup player Andrew Coltart hit a 73 to fall back to join Olazabal, Peter Senior and Wayne Smith in third place. Olazabal, who missed the cut at last week's Heineken Classic, rediscovered his from in style with an impressive round that included nine birdies. He was level par after the first six holes but hit seven birdies in an eight-hole run from the seventh. "It has been a nice day, I'm very pleased with the round," Olazabal said. "After six holes everything looked quite grey but after that I managed to get some birdies and that got me going." Third round scores Par 73, GB and Ire unless stated, (x) denotes amateur |
