113 Ecuadorean army officers facing trial

The army commander in Ecuador, General Norton Narvaez, has announced that one-hundred-and-thirteen members of the armed forces are to face trial for their part in last month's uprising.

The officers face up to eight years in prison for their involvement in the uprising, which forced the former president, Jamil Mahuad, from power.

The protest began as a march by indigenous leaders, but was joined by a number of soldiers who seized control of key government buildings in Quito in protest against the government's handling of the economy.

But after warnings from the United States, the military handed over power to the vice-president, Gustavo Noboa.
