Big day for ex-England men

Quinn scored in last August's Tyne-Wear derby

As Manchester United, Arsenal, Leeds and Liverpool play big games at the top of the table, a trio of former England managers face different challenges during this Saturday's Premiership programme.

Champions United go to Coventry three points clear of Leeds who host fourth-placed Liverpool.

Weekend fixtures
Aston Villa v Watford
Bradford v Arsenal
Derby v Sheff Wed
Leicester v Middlesbrough
Liverpool v Leeds
Man Utd v Coventry
Southampton v West Ham Sunderland v Newcastle
Tottenham v Chelsea
Sunday: Wimbledon v Everton
Arsenal visit Bradford, while Sunderland's fading challenge at the top of the table is tested by one of the fotmer national bosses.

Bobby Robson brings his Newcastle team to the Stadium of Light, desperate to avenge August's 2-1 defeat at St James Park, Ruud Gullit's last game in charge there.

Robson's successor in the national hot seat, Graham Taylor returns with Watford to Aston Villa, the club he took from the second division to second place in the top flight before leaving for England.

Meanwhile Glenn Hoddle is the third former England boss now managing in the top flight, and takes charge of Southampton for his first Premiership match in almost four years, at home to West Ham.

Elsewhere Spurs go looking for a first win over Chelsea in 22 games in a White Hart Lane London derby.

Incredibly, Robson was in charge of England the last time Chelsea lost at White Hart Lane, while Spurs' last victory over their London rivals anywhere came in 1990, the year Taylor took over.

Aston Villa v Watford

Villa can recall FA Cup hat-trick scorer Benito Carbone, who was cup-tied for the Worthington Cup semi-final defeat at Leicester after his heroics against Leeds.

Striker Richard Walker will step down while midfielder Ian Taylor and wing-back Mark Delaney are also pressing for returns.

Taylor: Saved Villa from potential oblivion
Long-term injury victims Peter Kennedy and Clint Easton are back in contention for Watford after successfully coming through a reserve team game this week.

Nordin Wooter has also trained this week after an ankle problem while Allan Smart is likely to start his first game since September as a replacement for Xavier Gravelaine, who moved to Le Havre last week.

But Richard Johnson, Nick Wright, Gifton Noel-Williams and Ben Iroha all remain on the casualty list.

Bradford v Arsenal

On-loan goalkeeper Aidan Davison will make his first start in almost two years for Bradford.

The Sheffield United keeper is back with his old club due to knee injuries to both Matt Clarke and Gary Walsh.

Former Welsh international Neville Southall has been signed as cover for Davison.

Injured pair Lee Mills and Ashley Westwood also missing for the Bantams.

Dennis Bergkamp could be back on the bench for Arsenal but Patrick Vieira is out after injuring a knee in training.

Brazilian left-back Silvinho is injured so veteran Nigel Winterburn will regain his place.

Davor Suker is available again after suspension and will start alongside Thierry Henry up front.

Derby v Sheff Wed

Georgi Kinkladze could be denied his first start in nearly two months by the return of Stefano Eranio.

Midfielder Kinkladze is hoping to replace hamstring victim Lars Bohinen but Eranio may be picked ahead of him.

The Italian broke his leg against Liverpool in November.

Darryl Powell is back from suspension but doubtful with an Achilles problem and Horacio Carbonari serves a one-match ban.

Rams manager Jim Smith also has to decide who will partner Branko Strupar up front, with Dean Sturridge, Malcolm Christie and Deon Burton all in contention.

Wednesday midfielders Danny Sonner and Alan Quinn both return from one-match suspensions.

Striker Andy Booth rates himself at "50-50" after a five-week lay-off with a groin injury.

There are late fitness test for Philip Scott (Achilles), Niclas Alexandersson (thigh) and Ian Nolan (knee).

Leicester v Middlesbrough

Leicester Worthington Cup heroes Steve Guppy, Muzzy Izzet and Neil Lennon are all doubtful.

Guppy is almost certainly out with the midfield pair facing fitness tests.

Tony Cottee is unlikely to play because an eye injury has still not cleared up while Ian Marshall and Stuart Wilson are also out of contention.

Middlesbrough wing back Keith O'Neill returns from a back injury but Robbie Stockdale, Brian Deane, Steve Vickers, Robbie Mustoe and Phil Stamp are all out.

Liverpool v Leeds

Liverpool will face second-placed Leeds with yet another new striking partnership tomorrow.

Titi Camara returns from suspension and can expect to play up front alongside Dutch striker Erik Meijer.

David Thompson starts a four-match ban with Vladimir Smicer and Danny Murphy competing for midfield roles alongside Patrik Berger, who has recovered from a slight groin strain.

Vegard Heggem came through a reserve run-out in midweek to test his tendinitis problem but Rigobert Song is still away with Cameroon in the African Nations Cup.

Alan Smith or Darren Huckerby could return for Leeds with Harry Kewell reverting to his usual wide role on the left.

Centre-back Michael Duberry is fit despite requiring stitches following a clash of heads with Paul Merson.

But David Batty is still injuted and David Hopkin sits out the second match of a three-game ban.

Man Utd v Coventry

After two matches in five days this week, United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has warned: "I could freshen things up."

Out of Africa: Coventry's Hadji and Southampton's Kachloul
Paul Scholes, Phil Neville, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Andy Cole are all available after failing to start Wednesday's 1-0 win at Hillsborough.

Coventry are trying to arrange for Moroccan internationals Moustapha Hadji and Youssef Chippo to return from The African Cup of Nations after their country's shock exit on Thursday.

Winger Runar Normann, who started the club's cup defeat to Charlton last week, is very doubtful with a knee injury.

Southampton v West Ham

Saints captain Jason Dodd is in line for a return under new manager Glenn Hoddle.

Hoddle on the training ground on Friday
Norwegian defender Claus Lundekvam suspended but centre-half Dean Richards has recovered from an Achilles problem.

Matthew Le Tissier and Stuart Ripley are out but Moroccan Hassan Kachloul could return after the African Cup of Nations.

Paolo di Canio is very unlikely to staret for the visitors due to a hamstring problem, while Paul Kitson is not match-fit despire 45 minutes action in a midweek reserve game.

Trevor Sinclair is likely to move up front with Gary Charles slotting in at right wing-back and keeper Craig Forrest in for the injured Shaka Hislop.

John Moncur and Igor Stimac return from injury and suspension respectively, but Marc-Vivien Foe is still away with Cameroon.

Sunderland v Newcastle

Sunderland welcome back striker Niall Quinn from suspension as they attempt to end a run of four defeats by doing the double over their neighbours.

Peter Reid is also expected to include Chris Makin and Nicky Summerbee in his starting line-up after they were left out of the defeat by Leeds.

Skipper Steve Bould and Wales international John Oster are ruled out with hamstring injuries.

With Darren Williams suspended, Jody Craddock is given a rare Premiership appearance in central defence.

Peruvian midfielder Nolberto Solano has been ruled out due to a thigh injury but £2m Paraguayan signing Diego Gavilan is included in the squad for the first time after his move last week.

Tottenham v Chelsea

Spurs welcome back Norwegian keeper Espen Baardsen from international duty as cover for Ian Walker.

Mauricio Taricco is back after missing the last two games through illness and will replace Justin Edinburgh.

John Scales may return from injury as a substitute alongside Willem Korsten but Oyvind Leonhardsen and Steffen Freund are still out.

Chelsea boss Gianluca Vialli will definitely be without three full-backs and with two centre-backs doubtful.

Albert Ferrer has not recovered from an ankle injury, while Graeme Le Saux and Celestine Babayaro are also absent through injury and international duty respectively.

Jon Harley and Bernard Lambourde are likely to fill in, while Vialli is hopeful Frank Leboeuf and Jes Hogh will be fit.

Vialli has re-registered himself as a player once again and must decide whether to field strike duo George Weah and Chris Sutton for the third consecutive game.
