India: protests over jailed fishermen

More than two-thousand people have staged a rally in the southern Indian city of Madras, demanding the release of nineteen fishermen who've been held in jails in Pakistan for nearly a year.

The fishermen, from Tamil Nadu state, were arrested by the Iranian navy last February, but were then handed to the Pakistani authorities who jailed them for violating Pakistan's immigration rules.

The protestors say the fishermen's jail terms have now finished, but they have not been released.

They say Indian government officials have ignored the men's plight.
