Record-breaking Aussies take title
Australia 337-7 Pakistan 185 Australia win by 152 runs Australia hit their highest ever one-day score to romp to a resounding victory against Pakistan and clinch the tri-nations title. Steve Waugh's world champions smashed 337-7 off their 50 overs in the second match of the best-of-three final in Sydney.
Pakistan slumped to 185 all out in reply to give Australia a 152-run win and a 2-0 success in the final of the series, which also included India.
After winning the toss, Australia took advantage of some sloppy fielding to pile on the runs, with most of their top order cashing in to make substantial scores. Ricky Ponting led the way with 78 off 80 balls, earning him the man of the match award, after Mark Waugh and Adam Gilchrist cracked half-centuries in a stunning opening stand of 74 in just 10.4 overs. Andrew Symonds, with a run-a-ball 45, and Steve Waugh then put on 66 from 54 balls for the fifth wicket. Pakistan missed chances to halt the run-flow, with Yousuf Youhanna dropping two catches to the delight of the sell-out crowd of 40,000. Australia passed their previous best limited overs total of 332-3, against Sri Lanka in Sharjah in 1990. The Pakistan batting was then swept away, with paceman Glenn McGrath - whose three-wicket burst in seven balls won the first game of the final in Melbourne - again the prime destroyer, taking 5-49. Youhanna tried to make amends for his fielding mishaps by hitting 41, but with key batsman Inzamam-ul Haq ruled out with a twisted ankle, the tourists could not come close to making a game of it. 'Psyched out' Pakistan captain Wasim Akram admitted his team had been psychologically destroyed by the Australians, in a repeat of the teams' one-sided World Cup final in England last summer. "I don't know what happens when we play Australia, but our game just collapses," Wasim said.
"Frankly, we did not deserve to win. Not only was our batting and bowling poor, but the fielding was just pathetic.
"The Australians are very aggressive and better-organised. They gave us no chance." Steve Waugh said he was happy to end the home season with another victory. "It's been a great end to a great season," he said. "We had started out with the aim of winning all six Tests and the one-day series. It feels nice to have achieved that." Scoreboard: Australia won by 152 runs to clinch best-of-three series 2-0.
