Survey finds Assembly 'failing' voters

Under 25% said they were satisfied with Assembly Under 25% said they were satisfied with Assembly

A voter survey conducted on behalf of BBC Wales suggests that the National Assembly is failing to reach the expectations of the Welsh electorate.

Under a quarter of those who took part in the survey said they were satisfied with the performance of the Assembly so far.

But it does seem that people support the Assembly in principle.

A thousand voters were interviewed last month for this survey - conducted by Beaufort Research on behalf of BBC Wales - to find out what people think about the new Assembly.

Only 23% said that they are satisfied with the Assembly's performance so far compared with 36% who are dissatisfied.

But the jury may still be out - over 40% said that they were not sure.

But despite the level of dissatisfaction, compared to previous surveys, there has been hardly any drop in the number of voters supporting the principle of an Assembly.

The poll shows 45% in favour and 26% against.

In terms of expectation about the Assembly's influence - only a quarter think that it would be the most important tier of government for them in 10 years time.

Research shows more think Europe will be the most important and 30% think that the Westminster government will affect their lives most.

With a possible vote of no confidence looming over Assembly First Secretary Alun Michael next week - there is more bad news for him in this survey.

Only 22% believe that he is the best person to be in the job - with 29% supporting Plaid Cymru leader Dafydd Wigley.
