Haines pledge for DRC peace process

The British Minister for Africa, Peter Haine, has pledged personnel, money and political support to bring peace to the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Mr Haine, who is on a week long visit to South Africa, told members of the country's parliament, that South Africa has Britain's full support in its efforts to resolve the wars in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Angola.

He also promised that Britain would not supply any more weapons to the region, following harsh criticism of its decision to sell military spare parts to Zimbabwe, one of the key participants in the Congo war.

On Angola, Mr Haine said governments must act firmly and quickly against their nationals who are sending arms to the UNITA rebel movement.

The BBC Correspondent in South Africa says Mr Haine will need to back his words with action.
