Parents meet over meningitis fears
Parents of children at a south Wales school have been invited to air their concerns following the death of a pupil from suspected meningitis. Caerphilly County Borough Council says several children have already been withdrawn by anxious parents from Cwmcarn secondary school. It follows the death of a 14-year-old pupil at the school, who died after being admitted to hospital at the weekend with suspected meningococcal meningitis. Tests are continuing to confirm the exact cause of death and which strain of meningitis was responsible for his death.
Wednesday's meeting at the school at 1630GMT will give parents a chance to question a representative from the National Meningitis Trust and Dr Lika Nehaul, the consultant in public health medicine at Gwent Health Authority.
A spokeswoman for Caerphilly council said there were no plans for a mass vaccination programme as it was believed the meningitis case was isolated. Relatives and close friends of the 14-year-old have been given antibiotics. |
