Wasim reaches new landmark
Pakistan captain Wasim Akram has become the first bowler to claim 400 one-day international wickets, though he failed to prevent an Australian victory in Wednesday's triangular series clash. Facing a target of 286, Pakistan made a flying start to reach 100 in 12.1 overs for the loss of only two wickets.
However, the visitors subsided to 205 all out in the 46th over as leg-spinner Stuart MacGill engineered a middle order slump on his way to taking four for 19 in 10 overs.
Wasim said: "We had a perfect start for a one-day cricket chase of 287 but again if you lose wickets it doesn't matter how good a start you have." The left-arm paceman reached the landmark total with his third wicket of the innings. He ended with 3-40 off nine overs. "I am quite honoured that I have got 400 wickets for Pakistan, but it would have been much better if we had won," Wasim said. Chasing the Australian total - the third highest in one-day cricket at the Sydney Cricket Ground - Pakistan attacked from the outset, smashing 33 runs off Glenn McGrath's first two overs.
Ijaz Ahmed fell for 23, off just 11 balls, but Saeed Anwar and Abdur Razzaq continued to plunder the Australian bowlers, taking full advantage of the early innings fielding restrictions as they raced to 50 in just the sixth over.
The runs dried up against MacGill, however, whose figures were the second best in an Australian one-day debut. "All I wanted to do was be a part of a winning team, and hopefully get a couple wickets, because you never know when you are going to play another game," man-of-the-match MacGill said. It took Pakistan almost 20 overs to move the score from 100 to 150, and they lost six wickets in the process. The last two wickets frustrated the Australians' attempts to finish the match quickly, but the result was never in doubt. Scorecard Australia:
