South African police chief in trouble

The new South African police chief, Jackie Selebi, is under investigation after a fellow officer accused him of intimidation, just two weeks since he took up the post.

Mr Selebi, South Africa's first black national police commissioner, has already been reprimanded after a policewoman accused him of calling her a chimpanzee during an altercation on New Year's Eve.

The minister of police recommended that he should undergo management counselling to improve his communication skills.

The BBC Johannesburg correspondent says there were hopes that Mr Selebi's appointment would improve relations within the racially divided force, but it appears to be throwing up unexpected problems.
