Singapore threatens to withdraw from Bintan

A Singapore company, SembCorp, has said it will close down an industrial park it manages on the Indonesian island of Bintan if violent protests there over land rights do not end.

About three-hundred armed villagers demanding better pay and compensation for land stormed a power plant at the industrial park on Saturday.

They have also threatened to reocupy land they sold to an Indonesian company to develop holiday resorts in Bintan.

The villagers say Indonesian police and military troops forced them to accept the land deal.

Bintan lies about forty kilometres south-east of Singapore, which has invested heavily on the island.
