Fifth Test picture gallery

It was a long time coming.

England had to wait until the last of their five Tests against South Africa to enjoy the thrill of victory.

With the series already lost, the match had been threatening to fizzle out into a damp draw as poor weather in Pretoria washed out two of the five days.

But after a historic agreement between the two captains, which saw an innings apiece shelved, it was game on.

BBC News Online reviews the highs and lows of the fifth Test.

There were fears the Test would be abandoned

The forecast was for rain, rain and more rain

But groundsmen laboured to preserve the wicket

And the fans worked even harder to keep the faith

England's players found ways to pass the time

When play started, both sides were fully committed

Gough's efforts were matched by Shaun Pollock

The match was heading for a boring draw, but Alec Stewart and Michael Vaughan had other ideas

In the end the win came with five balls to spare
