Injuries threaten Gunners' cup run
Leicester v Arsenal Fourth-round replay Leicester City are confident of inflicting an FA Cup upset on injury-ravaged Arsenal, who have a dozen squad players missing for their fourth-round replay. Skipper Tony Adams is the latest casualty on a list which includes Fredrik Ljungberg, Dennis Bergkamp and Marc Overmars.
Nigeria granted Arsenal an extra day's grace in order that striker Kanu could play in the original clash, but with the African Cup of Nations three days away, they have not been so generous this time.
Kanu is in Lagos for the next six weeks while Adams has been told he he needs at least another two weeks rest to recover from a stress fracture in his foot. The centre-back will be replaced by Frenchman Gilles Grimandi, who is fit again after dropping out of the Sunderland game just before kick-off with flu. Davor Suker will lead the attack alongside Thierry Henry. Arsenal's problems will be compounded for the trip to Manchester United next week because the Croatian striker is suspended. That means 18-year-old striker Graham Barrett could have to make his senior debut at Old Trafford. Wenger will be keen to add to his eight minutes of first-team experience and he will be on the bench against Leicester. The Foxes have their own injury problems which means Darren Eadie, who was an impressive substitute in Leicester's 1-1 draw with Chelsea at the weekend, is likely to partner Emile Heskey up front. Defender Frank Sinclair is suspended.
Chelsea v Nottingham Forest
Fourth round tie Nottingham Forest manager David Platt is such good friends with his Chelsea counterpart, Gianluca Vialli, the pair will go for dinner after their teams' FA Cup clash - whatever the result. First Division boss Platt has been friends with Vialli since the 1990 World Cup, when the Italian described him as the best player in the England team. The pair are such good friends, Platt even suggested they swap team lists 24 hours before Wednesday night's clash. "He hasn't returned my call yet," said Platt, joked Platt took over at Forest last season. With the First Division outfit well down the table, their cup run is bringing welcome relief to the City Ground. If Forest manage to take advantage of Chelsea's recent poor form - managing just two points from the last two games against Bradford and Leicester - they will join a record number of Nationwide League teams in the fifth round. The Blues will be without new signings George Weah and Emerson Thome, who are ineligible, and Roberto di Matteo, who has broken his arm. Platt has no injury worries ahead of the delayed fourth round tie but will be without Andy Johnson, Chris Doig and Nigel Quashie. The winners of the above two ties meet in the fifth round |
