A well-known Pakistani surgeon belonging to the minority Ahmadiyya sect has been shot dead in Faisalabad.

Dr Shams-ul-Haq Tayyab had made his name for pioneering work in grafting limbs.

A spokesman for the Ahmadiyya community said Dr Tayyab had received death threats from Sunni Muslim extremists.

But a police official in Faisalabad told the BBC that it was too early to say what the motive for the attack was.

The killing is the latest in what the Ahmadiyya community say is a campaign of persecution against them by other Muslim groups after they were declared heretics by parliament in 1974.
