Rusedski out of Davis Cup tie
Great Britain's Davis Cup captain David Lloyd says there is no chance of Greg Rusedski being fit for next month's Davis Cup clash with the Czech Republic. The Canadian-born player is recovering from surgery to his right foot, and has been left out of the five-man squad. "There's not even a 5% possibility of him playing, so I'm not even going to name him in the team," said Lloyd at the Australian Open in Melbourne.
In Rusedski's absence Neil Broad is lined up to continue his doubles partnership with Tim Henman.
Jamie Delgado favourite to back up Henman in the singles. The 22-year-old from Birmingham actually started the year higher than Henman in the rankings following progress in a recent tournament in Calcutta. But he failed to qualify for the Australian Open, where no 11 seed Henman is through to the second round. Arvind Parmar and Alan Mackin complete the five-man squad. Parmar, 21, impressed in Melbourne on Tuesday, losing a draining five-set battle with world no 34 Younes El Aynaoui of Morocco as the Australian heat took its toll. Mackin is just 18 and currently stands 521st in the world rankings, but reached the quarter-finals of a Challenger Tour event in Newcastle last year. Lloyd hopes to use Rusedksi's absence to have a good luck at the youngsters. "It's obviously disappointing," added Lloyd, "but there's nothing else we can do about it and at least we know the situation well in advance and can prepare. "It's a pity, but it's a great opportunity and we're going to be putting a lot of hours in." The Czechs have Jiri Novak and Daniel Vacek, both world top 50 players, and have chosen an indoor clay court on which to play the match.
