Mexico students vote to end strike

Students and staff at the National Autonomous University of Mexico -- the country's biggest -- have voted overwhelmingly to end the strike that has paralysed classes there for almost nine months.

Nearly ninety percent of the two hundred thousand students taking part in the vote gave their backing to plans by the new rector, Juan Ramon de la Fuente.

He has proposed giving the students a greater say in decision-making, and has offered to scrap a proposed increase in tuition fees. Correspondents say the strike leaders are now under great pressure to end the stoppage.
