MP promises Owls 'truth'

Wednesday beat Bradford 2-0 on Saturday

An MP and leading critic of Sheffield Wednesday's management and board has promised to "tell the truth" over the saga but only after Tuesday's FA Cup replay at Wolves.

Joe Ashton, Labour member for Bassetlaw, was one of four MPs who called for manager Danny Wilson to be sacked hours before Saturday's 2-0 win over Bradford.

Ashton also resigned his position as a vice-president at Hillsborough.

"We are going to tell the fans the truth, but not yet because first there is another big game," Ashton told the Yorkshire Post.

Joe Ashton: Resigned as he made criticism
"Talk to people in the streets and the fish and chip shops; a lot of them don't want to know about the crisis in the National Health Service, they want to know about the crisis at Sheffield Wednesday.

"This is not all about the manager. It is about a debt of £16m that has come from nobody knows where.

"We want a dignified debate with dignified answers and we are going to get them.

Another of the four MPs, who met major investers Charterhouse merchant bank on Friday defended the controversial statement.

"There was a case for a change of manager being one of the things which could have saved the season at Hillsborough," said Clive Betts.

"I accept now the merchant bank are not going to intervene. The board of directors have said Wilson is staying and I presume we are going to have to save ourselves from relegation in other ways."

Blunkett distance

The other two members of the so-called MPs gang of four, cabinet member David Blunkett and Bill Michie, have attempted to distance themselves from their demand for Wilson to be sacked.

A statement from employment and education secretary Blunkett claimed neither had put their signatures to any written material issued last week.

Supporters are planning further protests against chairman Dave Richards.

The Wednesday Independent Supporters Association (WISA) Charterhouse come clean about their furture plans for their 36% holding in Wednesday.

Team news

Wilson's team meanwhile, are looking to build on Saturday's 2-0 win over Bradford with a place in the last 16 of the FA Cup.

The Owls boss has doubts surrounding Niclas Alexandersson (back), Andy Booth (groin) and Petter Rudi (Achilles).

The game is taking place because a linesman wrongly gave Wolves a goal in the original Hillsborough tie.

The Midlanders will beat Portsmouth 3-2 on Saturday as Kevin Muscat is serving a one-match ban.

But striker Ade Akinbiyi will feature after being left out of Nigeria's final squad of 22 for the African Nations Cup.

A Wolves victory - or one for Nottingham Forest over Chelsea on Wednesday - would ensure a record number of eight Football League clubs in the fifth round.
