Gorman faces interests inquiry

Teresa Gorman: Up before parliamentary authorities again

Conservative MP Teresa Gorman is expected to appear before a private meeting of the House of Commons Standards and Privileges Committee on Tuesday to answer charges of allegedly failing to declare overseas and UK property interests.

If Ms Gorman is found to have failed to properly declare the interests, the committee could suspend the Billericay MP from Parliament.

This is not the first time Ms Gorman has been up before the Parliamentary authorities.

It is thought the standards and privileges committee is also likely to ask her to answer the accusation that she misled Parliamentary Standards Commissioner Elizabeth Filkin when the MP was asked, during an inquiry last year into other undeclared business interests, about a land deal.

Ms Gorman had to apologise to the House after failing to declare two directorships and a property in London.

Parliamentary rules require all MPs to declare any interest when speaking on or introducing legislation.

Blocked from mayoral shortlist

It has been reported that the current investigation into Ms Gorman's business interests was the chief reason Tory party managers left her off the shortlist to become the party's mayoral candidate last month.

Earlier this month, she was forced to deny that she was about to defect to the UK Independence Party.

The maverick MP last year announced her intention to stand down as an MP at the next election.
