Farmer tells his own story
A Welsh farmer has helped create a unique documentary highlighting the worst crisis to hit the farming industry since the 1930s. William Jenkins, who is struggling to survive on his hillside farm above Manmoel in Monmouthshire, has spent the last 12 months filming his day-to-day life. And his film - the Silence of the Farms - was shown nationwide on BBC 2's Video Diary.
Mr Jenkins is the third generation of his family to work on the farm.
But as he struggles to pay his bills - like many farmers across Wales he is worried he may be the last. Mr Jenkins has recorded an incredible 150 hours on tape - and has gone through three video cameras in the process. One was lost as he rescued sheep during a heavy snowfall. He learned filming and editing techniques like knowing how to talk into the camera for the 40-minute programme. "It's been difficult and a lot of tapes I've taped, I've played them back after and the animal I was supposed to be taping was in the wrong place at the wrong moment in time," said Mr Jenkins. "But you get there in the end and you keep trying and practice and practice and practice." |
