India sends more troops to Kashmir

The Indian government is to send more security forces to Indian-administered Kashmir to counter the increasing number of attacks by separatist guerrillas.

Announcing the measures, the Indian home minister, LK Advani, said a heavy security blanket would be thrown over the entire region.

The number of security personnel in border areas is to be doubled, more commanders will be deployed in each district and extra arms and communications equipment will be given to village committees in the area. More money will also be spent on improving job prospects in the region. In one attack on Indian security forces in November, separatists guerrillas killed seven troops in a raid on the army's headquarters in Srinagar.
