Gun accused applies for bail

Richard Jameson was shot outside his Portadown home Richard Jameson was shot outside his Portadown home

A man accused of being in possession of the gun used to murder Portadown UVF leader Richard Jameson has applied for bail in the High Court.

Nigel Willis, 27, a barman from Dunore Avenue, Moygashel, Dungannon, was said to have told police he was given the gun in Dungannon after the shooting and took it to Cookstown.

A prosecution lawyer told Lord Justice Nicholson: "Mr Jameson was murdered on 10 January and the handgun was found on 13 January.

"On examination it was found to be the gun used in the murder."

Nigel Willis is accused of possessing the gun with intent to endanger life.

Opposing his bail application, the prosecution lawyer said the applicant might abscond as he had a brother living in Monaghan.

"He is suspected of being a member of the LVF and obviously there is a risk in view of the on-going feud in the Portadown area," he said.

'Risk of getting shot'

Lord Jusice Nicholson said: "There is a risk of him getting shot if he got bail."

A lawyer for Nigel Willis said he was challenging admissions he was alleged to have made to police.

"He denies being involved in possession of this gun and also denies he is a member of the LVF," said the lawyer.

He applied for an adjournment of the bail application until the judge saw the interview notes.

"Where the Crown rely exclusively on interview notes I do not think it is unrealistic to asked that the judge hearing a bail applicaion should look at them," he said.

Lord Justice Nicholson said he was willing to look at the notes and adjourned the application until Tuesday.
