Babbel pledges future to Reds

Markus Babbel Markus Babbel will offer Liverpool experience at the back

German international defender Markus Babbel is on his way to the Premiership, after signing a pre-contract agreement with Liverpool.

The highly-rated Bayern Munich star, who has been a long-term target of the Anfield club, is due to join at the end of the season.

His contract expires in the summer and he will move to Liverpool on a free transfer under the Bosman ruling.

A proposed transfer fell through last season after Liverpool baulked at the asking price, but Babbel revealed he was now looking forward to a change of scenery after nine years at Bayern.

'Liverpool are a traditional club with a high profile," he said. "I'll give it my best shot. I just want to try something new."

Old Trafford target

According to Liverpool's new official website, the club's vice-chairman Peter Robinson and manager Gérard Houllier were involved in negotiations with the player at the weekend and have now thrashed out the terms of his contract.

Liverpool secured Babbel's services ahead of a number of leading European clubs, including Real Madrid of Spain and arch rivals Manchester United, who have been interested in the player for a number of seasons.

The 27-year-old, who can play either at right back or in the centre of the defence, will offer Liverpool more versatility at the back next season.

He will link up with close friend and international colleague Dietmar Hamann.

In a statement, Liverpool spokesman Ian Cotton said: "The player has now signed a pre-contract agreement with the club and will be joining us upon the expiry of his current contract with Bayern Munich in the summer."
