President visits rebel-hit western Uganda

The Ugandan president, Yoweri Museveni, has made an unexpected visit to the western district of Bundibugyo, where there have been an increasing number of rebel attacks.

At least twenty-four people were killed at a camp for displaced people on Saturday, when rebels of the Allied Democratic Forces fired into the camp, setting fire to huts.

It follows a rebel raid on another camp last week, in which ten civilians died.

Ugandan government troops have been based in the area since last November, following the upsurge in rebel activity. Humanitarian agencies have been forced to scale down their activiites because of the fighting and rebel threats against their operations.
