The Foreign Office will be urged to step up pressure on the Thai Government to review the jail sentence of a Scottish woman convicted of drug smuggling.

In 1993, Sandra Gregory was jailed for 25 years for attempting to take heroin out of Thailand.

The 35-year-old served four years in what is nicknamed the "Bangkok Hilton" before being repatriated to Britain to serve out the rest of her sentence, which was reduced to 22 years.

Her parents, who live in Aberdeenshire, have long campaigned for her release.

Hopes for pardon

They have been pinning their hopes on a pardon from the King of Thailand which has so far failed to materialise.

The Gregory's have expressed disappointment at what they believe to be a lack of help from the Foreign Office.

On Friday they discussed the case with their local MP Malcolm Bruce who has been granted a short debate in the House of Commons on Monday.

The Liberal Democrat politician will call on the government to change its policy of not supporting prisoner appeals.

But he will also point out that since Gregory has been in prison in Britain, others will have been jailed and released for similar offences.
