China: quake leaves thousands homeless

Thousands of people in south-west China are living in tents and makeshift shelters after two earthquakes hit Yunnan province yesterday.

Officials say that at least four people were killed and more than ten thousand homes were destroyed in Yao'an county.

The Red Cross in Hong Kong is sending food, tents and blankets to the region. Yunnan lies on the line of a large geological fault and it has been hit by about a dozen powerful earthquakes in the past fifty years.
