Scarlets win in Stradey thriller

james Dafydd James touches over for the game's first try

Llanelli 25-15 Wasps

Llanelli have booked themselves a home tie in the quarter-finals of the Heineken Cup, after defeating Wasps 25-15 at Stradey Park.

Tries from Dafydd James, Neil Boobyer, Matt Cardey and Craig Gillies proved too much for the Londoners, despite a ferocious fightback from Lawrence Dallaglio's side.

We knew that we had to take some risks out there, but we went in with the right approach, and I am delighted for the players

In a blistering start to the game, Salesi Finau should have opened the scoring after just 5 minutes, when full-back Cardey broke through the Wasps defence, only for the winger to knock-on with the line beckoning.

The Welsh club were clearly looking to keep the ball in hand and when Scott Quinnell knocked Joe Worsley backwards, John Davies rushed forward, catching the visitors offside. Fly-half Stephen Jones converted the penalty.

It was a bright opening from Llanelli, but Wasps' strength up front soon began to show.

Kenny Logan missed a simple opportunity to equalise on 17 minutes, but the visitors had clearly picked up the pace, forcing a number of early errors and pushing Llanelli back into their own half.

On 20 minutes, Boobyer brought Dallaglio down with only feet to spare and, despite a penalty count that clearly favoured Llanelli, the visitors began to dominate.

Until, that is, centre Boobyer broke through to feed out to James. Jones converted to push Llanelli 10-0 ahead at the break.

High drama

The Scarlets moved up a gear after half-time, pushing the Londoners back with some well timed running.

And Quinnell - whose influence proved supreme all afternoon - quickly broke through a number of tackles to set up Llanelli's second try.

The Welsh international picked up from the back of the scrum, Jones fed a long pass to James, Boobyer broke through, chipped over John Ufton and touched down on the left for a superb score.

The 15-0 lead did not last long, however, as Wasps hit back through Peter Scrivener from a short-range scrum.

The ease with which the visitors scored, clearly shocked the home side and their response was magnificent.

Quinnell, Rupert Moon, Vernon Cooper - who replaced the injured Chris Wyatt - and captain Wayne Proctor were all involved, before Cardey went over in the right corner for Llanelli's third, which Jones again failed to convert.

Logan pulled back three points for the visitors when the Scarlets were caught offside, before a fine run from Dallaglio pushed Llanelli back onto their line.

The pressure from Wasps was supreme, but the Scarlets held out to launch a counter attack which Gillies touched over on the right.

It left the score at 25-10 and although Trevor Leota hit back with a late try, it was not enough for the Londoners who must now travel away in the Cup's knockout stage.
