McAllister's century as Dons despair
Coventry 2-0 Wimbledon Gary McAllister scored his 100th league goal before setting up Coventry's second for Robbie Keane. The home side had little trouble winning despite the absence of Moroccans Mustapha Hadji and Youssef Chippo. The Moroccan FA blocked the pair's release from their African Cup of Nations squad at the eleventh hour.
But they were not missed against a Wimbledon side who managed only one worthwhile effort all game.
McAllister netted from the penalty spot on 56 minutes, before Keane sealed the win 16 minutes from time. Wimbledon employed Carl Cort as the only striker, and it was the Sky Blues who dominated the opening 45 minutes. In the second minute Cedric Roussel headed over a Paul Telfer cross at the near post.
Whelan did the same after Keane had turned Dons defender Kenny Cunningham.
After 23 minutes Dons keeper Neil Sullivan was called into meaningful action to deny the young Irishman. Confident 20-year-old debutant John Eustace surged into the penalty area before cutting the ball back to Keane in space on the edge of the area. The Republic of Ireland player struck his shot cleanly enough but Sullivan was able to save low to his left. Eustace volleyed over the bar and more trickery by Keane created an opening for Roussel who flashed his low effort across goal. Coventry began the second period on the offensive and they gained their reward in the 56th minute, albeit from the penalty spot. Froggatt and Roussel were involved in the build-up and then Dons defender Hermann Hreidarsson handled as Belgium international Roussel tried to thread the ball through to Keane.
Referee Steve Bennett pointed to the spot - and up stepped McAllister to cooly
send Sullivan the wrong way and complete his own personal goal century.
It continued to be one-way traffic towards the Dons goal and Eustace was put clear by Keane only for Sullivan to race out and block his shot. Wimbledon threatened for just about the first time when Robbie Earle turned sharply and saw his shot fly inches past the post. But two minutes later Keane effectively killed off the game as a contest with McAllister this time the provider. The 35-year-old Scot threaded the ball into the Irishman's path and, although Sullivan saved his first effort, he had time to tuck away the rebound. It was more than enough for Coventry to take all three points. Dons' silenced Wimbledon manager Egil Olsen and coach Mick Harford both failed to attend the post-match news conference. None of the Wimbledon players would comment on another sorry performance in which Sky Blues keeper Magnus Hedman did not have a single shot to save. Teams: Coventry: Hedman, Telfer, Williams, Breen, Froggatt, Eustace, McAllister, Palmer, Whelan, Roussel, Keane. Subs: Ogrizovic, Konjic, Normann, Strachan, Gustafsson. Wimbledon: Sullivan, Cunningham, Andersen, Hreidarsson, Francis, Kimble, Earle, Ardley, Andresen, Euell, Cort. Subs: Davis, Badir, Willmott, Hughes, Gray. Referee: Steve Bennett (Orpington)
