Chissano sworn in for second term

President Joaquim Chissano of Mozambique has been sworn into office for a second, and final, five-year term.

In his inaugural address, he promised to put the eradication of poverty and the creation of jobs at the top of his agenda, and listed the consolidation of democracy and the fight against corruption amongst his other priorities.

The ceremony in Maputo's Independence Square was attended by the visiting Chinese foreign minister Tang Jiaxuan and the presidents of ten African states including Angola and Mozambique's five neighbours: South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi and Tanzania.

A summit of the Southern African Development Community is to be held in Maputo tomorrow.

The leader of Mozambique's opposition Renamo party, Afonso Dhlakama, boycotted the event. He's called for last month's elections to be annulled because of alleged fraud, but an appeal to the supreme court was rejected.
