Strike paralyses Indian Kashmir Indian-administered Kashmir has been brought to a virtual standstill by a strike in protest against alleged excesses by the Indian security forces. The strikers - organised by trade and transport unions - accuse Indian troops of setting fire to 90 shops in Pattan, in retaliation for the killing of two soldiers by militants. They also accuse the military of commandeering civilian buses, forcing off their passengers - and say the authorities have failed to act to prevent this. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
