British duo through to Open
British pair Arvind Parmar and Julie Pullin have pulled off shock wins to reach the first round of the Australian Open in Melbourne next week. Parmar, ranked 256 in the world, defeated Petr Luxa, of the Czech Republic, with a 6-3 7-5 success. The 21-year-old, who impressed at Wimbledon last year, served four aces and capitalised on three of his five break points to seal victory against a man 75 places above him in the ratings. Pullin, rated 171 in the world, beat 124th-ranked Samantha Reeves 6-2 7-6 (7-3) after the American produced five double faults and 35 unforced errors. Warwickshire's Louise Latimar could not make it a hat-trick of upsets, however, as she crashed out 7-5 6-1 to Argentina's Florencia Labat. Birmingham's Jamie Delgado was trailing Julien Boutter, of France, 6-4 1-0 in their match before rain halted play. |
