Football first for tagged player
Ipswich Town defender Gary Croft has become the first professional footballer to play in a league match with an electronic tag. Croft was tagged on his release from prison on Monday, after serving about a month of a four month sentence for driving while disqualified, and perverting the course of justice. He was named as a substitute for the First Division match against Swindon Town at Portman Road, Ipswich, on Saturday afternoon. And his unprecedented appearance on the pitch came in the 71st minute, to replace Mike Stockwell. Ipswich won the game 3-0.
But the defender will not be playing any evening games for the next few weeks.
Under the terms of his release, the 25-year-old has to wear the device for the next three weeks, and obey a night time curfew from 7pm until 7am. Croft played for Ipswich Town Reserves in their 1-0 win over Gillingham on Wednesday afternoon. The left-footed player played at wing back with the electronic tag clearly visible, fitted to his left ankle. After Wednesday's reserve team victory, Ipswich manager George Burley said: "Gary is a naturally fit boy and performed very well. I was pleasantly surprised how well he came through. "He will be in contention for a place in the first team."
