Viking hoard in the Irish Republic

A hoard of Viking treasure, dating back more than a thousand years, has been discovered in the Irish Republic in a cave popular with tourists.

The hoard, includes silver and bronze coins and artefacts not seen before.

It was found by one of the guides at the cave as he was clearing discarded litter from a crack in a rock at the end of a busy day.

In the tenth century, Vikings massacred up to a thousand people from a local tribe who had taken refuge in the Dunmore Cave.

Archaeologists said coins among the treasure indicated it was hidden some forty years after the massacre.
