India crushed by Aussies

srinath Srinath unsuccessfully appeals for Symonds' wicket

India 100, Australia 101-5
Australia win by five wickets

Australia defeated India by five wickets in Sydney, thanks to two four-wicket hauls from Glenn McGrath and Andrew Symonds.

Batting first on a wicket dampened by rain, India performed poorly at the crease before being bowled out in 36.3 overs for a dismal 100 - their fifth-lowest total in 428 one-day internationals.

srinath There was little for India to celebrate after the match
McGrath, who finished with figures of 4-8 from 10 overs, claimed the vital wickets of Sachin Tendulkar (one), Sourav Ganguly (five) and Venkat Laxman (two) in his first spell to effectively end India's chances of a reasonable total.

Brett Lee, bowling first change, then picked up Devang Ghandi for six before his older brother Shane dismissed Robin Singh for 11.

All-rounder Symonds claimed Rahul Dravid and Anil Kumble in successive deliveries to reduce the tourists to 74-7 in the 28th over.

Dravid, one of only three players to make double figures, top scored for India with 22, although his contribution was still 10 less than the innings' 32 extras.

Sensing a quick kill, Australian captain Steve Waugh recalled McGrath to the attack and the Aussie paceman responded by dismissing Samir Dighe with the final ball of his 10th over.

Symonds, who was named man of the match, ended with figures of 4-11 off 3.3 overs.

Australia lost opener Mark Waugh, lbw to Javagal Srinath for three, and vice-captain Ricky Ponting to Prasad for a duck before the total had climbed to 30.

Adam Gilchrist, who also took three catches during the Indian innings, set the Australians on course with a typically aggressive 37 before falling to Srinath.

The Indian paceman also picked up Michael Bevan (two) and Steve Waugh (four) to finish with 4-30 off 10 overs, but his efforts went unrewarded as Symonds (28 not out) and Damien Martyn (13 not out) steered Australia to their second win of the series.
