100 strikers arrested before Jammu demo

Police in Jammu, in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, have arrested more than one hundred striking state government workers who were planning to hold a demonstration.

More than three hundred thousand workers have been on strike for three weeks demanding the payment of allowances they are due.

The government says it is in financial crisis because of the war against Kashmiri militants and cannot afford to pay staff more than their basic wages.

On Wednesday the state authorities threatened the strikers with dismissal if they did not return to work by Thursday morning.

The threat has failed to break the strike.
