Chinese miners trapped underground
Rescue workers in China are struggling to reach 37 coal miners trapped for the fourth day deep underground in eastern Jiangsu Province.
Three workers are known to have died when a section of a mine collapsed near the city of Xuzhou collapsed on Tuesday. On Wednesday, 23 miners were rescued. Local officials believe that time may be running out for those trapped 320 metres underground. A rescue official said: "Rescue workers are continuing furiously, but we fear that oxygen in the trapped portion of the mine is running out."
The official said rescue workers could still hear tapping sounds from the mine, a sign that at least some of the trapped miners were alive. Three rescue teams are digging toward the miners from different directions. |
