Beer ads stay for Iran-US game

Football officials in the United States have refused to remove beer advertisements from the stadium where the Iranian and US national football teams are due to play a match on Sunday.

Officials from the US soccer federation said what they called an Iranian extremist group had complained that the advertisements were offensive to Muslims.

The match will be the first the Iranian national team has played in the United States since the 1979 Islamic Revolution - the US soccer federation called for it to be played in a spirit of friendship and sportsmanship.

The American beer company, Budweiser, is one of eight sponsors of the federation, and advertises heavily on billboards around sportsgrounds and in programmes.
