Mexican singer accused of abuse arrested

One of Mexico's most famous pop singers, Gloria Trevi -- who went into hiding a year ago following allegations that she was involved in child sex abuse -- has been arrested in Brazil.

Miss Trevi was detained in Rio de Janeiro together with her manager, Sergio Andrade -- who's also accused of abusing girls -- following an extradition request from the Mexican government.

The singer has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.

Miss Trevi rose to fame throughout Latin America in the late 1980s with what correspondents describe as a witty, sexually flamboyant and politically rebellious image. But the BBC Brazil correspondent says last year rumours began to circulate that the young singers in Miss Trevi's entourage were being enticed into sexual abuse.
