Team profile: Senegal

Senegal's presence at the Nations Cup Finals has been sporadic, and though nearly always performing impressively, the Lions have never quite broken into the top flight of African football.

The Lions

Now under veteran German coach Peter Schnittger, the Lions' fortunes have revived, and he has managed to persuade a number of Senegal's foreign legion back to the fold.

French-based defender Papa Diop captains a team that is almost entirely based abroad, including six European countries.

Their results in pre-tournament friendlies have been impressive - beating Ivory Coast at home, and then drawing with Morocco away.

Nations Cup record
4th place: 1965, 1990

When it comes to the Nations Cup, Schnittger is optmistic that the Lions can get through the first round - though he knows the opposition will be tough.

They are seeded to finish behind Egypt, Senegal and Burkina Faso, but are capable of springing a surprise.

"We have no outstanding player which can be an advantage because it encourages team spirit", Schnittger has said.

And a team that boast Salif Keita as their number 11 are surely capable of producing some sweet music on the pitch.
