Tractor driver cleared of death

court graphic The prosecution dropped the case against Mr Jones

A tractor driver who denied causing death by dangerous driving has been cleared at Caernarfon Crown Court after the prosecution dropped the case.

Arwel Wyn Jones, 42, of Y Wenallt, Bala, was charged following a road tragedy at Llanuwchllyn, near Bala, in November 1998.

Car driver Mr David Williams, of Gwauncaegurwen near Ammanford in south Wales, died when his VW Golf collided with the tractor which was towing a trailer on an unclassified road.

No evidence

The Crown also offered no evidence against agricultural contractor Gwyn Roberts, 39, of Dol Hendre Isa, Llanuwchllyn, who denied aiding and abetting the offence and he was also cleared.

A jury had heard that the tractor and trailer had brake defects and were part of a fleet owned by Roberts.

The court was told that both men would plead guilty to a charge of using a vehicle in a dangerous condition, which would be heard by magistrates.
