Hospital investigation into pensioner death

A ward at Pinderfields Hospital

A pensioner was found dead in a hospital changing cubicle - hours after he was thought to have gone home.

Bosses at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, have launched an investigation into how the 78-year-old man was not found for so long.

He had visited the hospital for an x-ray and had been shown to the cubicle afterwards to get dressed.

He was discovered five hours later by staff tidying up after the day's work.

David Collins, of Pinderfields and Pontefract Hospitals NHS Trust said: "Following his x-ray examination, a radiographer visited the patient in his cubicle just before 12pm and informed him he could now get dressed and go home.

"The outpatient was found collapsed inside the changing cubicle at approximately 4.50pm.

"Our resuscitation experts tried to revive him but unfortunately were unable to do so."

A post mortem has shown that the man, from the Wakefield area, died of natural causes
