Independent probe into Cambodian killings

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mary Robinson, says theCambodian prime minister, Hun Sen, has agreed to the appointment of an independent investigator to help the government look into allegations of extra-judicial killings.

Mrs Robinson, speaking after talks with Cambodian leaders in Phnom Penh, said she was concerned at the government's lack of progress in investigating alleged human rights abuses.

Last July, at least forty-five supporters of the ousted prime minister, Prince Norodom Ranariddh, are alleged to have been murdered.

The Cambodian authorities denied any involvement.
