Yasser Arafat meets Madeleine Albright at the US State Department

The Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat, who is in Washington, is meeting President Clinton in the latest attempt to break the deadlock in the Middle East peace process.

Mr Arafat has already seen the American Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright, and said afterwards that Washington had not yet put foward any new ideas for reviving peace talks.

The Palestinian leader repeated that he is pressing for Israel to keep its promise under the peace accords and to cede occupied territories to the Palestinians.
