Tension in Equatorial Guinea

Reports from Equatorial Guinea say the country is still tense, the day after the authorities announced there had been a separatist attack in the coastal town of Luba.

Troops are stationed in front of the main buildings in the capital, Malabo.

The government said yesterday that the armed forces were on maximum alert after the attack, which it blamed on an illegal organisation, known as MAIB, which has campaigned for the independence of the Equato-Guinean island of Bioko.

Meanwhile, a new government has been announced, dominated, like the last one, by members of the mainland Fang community.

The powerful former interior minister Julio Ndong Ela Mangue was among those dropped.

Correspondents say the longstanding rivalry between the island Bubi community and the mainland Fang -- who dominate the government -- has intensified since the discovery of oil off Bioko island.
