Fifteen hundred Mexicans attend special mass calling for peace in Chiapas

About fifteen-hundred people from the Mexican state of Chiapas have attended a special mass in the capital, Mexico City, after travelling one thousand kilometres on a pilgrimage for peace.

Bishop Samuel Ruiz from Chiapas led the mass, calling for an end to the tensions in the state, where Zapatista rebels have waged a violent campaign against the Mexican government.

In another development, a judge in Chiapas has ordered that twenty-two police officers stand trial for murder, after they fired on stone-throwing Indian protesters last week, killing a woman.
