The Burundian army has reported a major clash with Hutu rebels in the south of the country.
An army spokesman said the rebels killed at least twelve civilians in the town of Rumonge near Lake Tanganyika, some 75 km south of the capital Bujumbura.
He said government soldiers intervened and killed 20 rebels.
In a separate incident, the army said Hutu rebels backed by Hutus from neighbouring Rwanda had killed 32 civilians in north-west Burundi on Monday night.
The rebels have recently said that they are trying to force the army to support talks on the return of multi-party democracy to Burundi.
