Belgrade mediation in Montenegro dispute

Two political factions that have been battling for power in Montenegro have signed an agreement after mediation by the Yugoslav Federal Prime Minister, Radoje Kontic.

The power struggle in Montenegro which makes up the new Yugoslav Federation with Serbia came to a head last Wednesday, when supporters of the pro-Belgrade ex-President, Momir Bulatovic, clashed with police while protesting against the inauguration of his successor, Milo Djukanovic.

Mr Bulatovic's supporters have now called off their campaign for a new presidential election and recognized President Djukanovic.

In return, he has agreed in the new document to hold early parliamentary elections by the end of May.
